Unpopular opinions!
You can still request a fandom.

Turns out I really don't know the popular opinions in most of these. So mostly what I did is wrote negative opinions. So you should beware. I don't think there's any unreasonable bashing in here, just stating of things I don't like, but if negative opinions of stuff you love makes you sad, maybe you should steer clear.

My unpopular opinions!
Twin Peaks, per [info]rahirah's request
-I loved the movie (Fire Walk With Me). I hear many were disappointed by it; I liked it better than the show.
-James, Donna, Norma, and Ed were all superfluous and boring characters.
-Moira Kelly was a better Donna than Lara Flynn Boyle.
-The network should not have forced the hands of the writers to reveal who killed Laura Palmer.
-Everything was pretty horrible after the revelation, except that last 3 eps, which were made of so much awesome it hurt.
-I did not find the humor very humorous at first. Most of the obvious attempts at randomosity--Log Lady, moose head on the table, turned me right off. I grew to love Log Lady though.
-Audrey turned me off at first.
-I loved the giant, the midget, the backwards talk, the visions, the dreams, the Black Lodge, and Bob. So much. <3
-Truman and Cooper have major slashy man love.
-As do Truman and Albert.
-Sheryl Lee was annoying as Laura, except in the movie.
-I hate the theme song and most of the music.

Anne of Green Gables, per [info]my_daroga's request
-The movies are better than the books.
-Anne from the books is sort of uppity and judgmental of those she sees as less smart than herself (and I find all of L.M. Montgomery that way in general). And Anne is also sort of awful because she tries to kill Rusty.
-Dr. Saddler and Moody Sturgeon are kind of hot. So is Josie Pye. And Jenn Pringle, and Emmeline Harris, and Essie. But not Morgan Harris, who's generally disgusting.
-Marilla and Matthew should've had a thing.
-Anne and Diana had a thing. Especially when they were dancing together in the movie after the Christmas ball.
-Marilla and Mrs. Lynde should have a thing.
-I don't think "The Continuing Story" sucks, as I haven't seen it yet.
-Anne looks bad for her recital of "The Highway Man" at the White Sands hotel in the movie. I kind of like it, though.
-The part about Anne's Jersy cow (in the second movie) is boring and fails at harking back to Anne's years of making trouble.
-I don't think Anne's meanness to Gilbert is repressed or unconscious attraction. I think him picking on her is, but with her, I think she really just doesn't like him.
-Anne's poofed sleeve dress is hideous.
-I don't find Anne drowning the rat in the plumb pudding sauce is funny. I think it's both gross and tragic.
-I think the actress who played Miss Stacy could've been better.
-Both Megan Follows and Johnathan Crombie look their very best in the second half of the first movie.

Battlestar Galactica, per [info]germaine_pet's request
-Six is aesthetically perfect, but she's not hot. Also, she's often really boring and her clothes are ugly, except when she's Gina.
-And sometimes she just strikes me as a bad actress, instead of a robot.
-Eight is by far the hottest Cylon.
-Though Xenalon is up there for second.
-Gaeta is gay for Gaius.
-Gaius knows it.
-Gaeta is one of the coolest characters there is, with a hidden complex story that much better because it doesn't get harped on (*coughs*Starbuck*coughs*).
-Season 3 sucked.
-But I liked the Sagittarians and mechanics' strike eps, which from what I can tell no one else did.
-The finale of S3 still wasn't good, and didn't make up for any of the badness.
-Bill/Roslin should never happen in canon.
-Callie and Helo are awesomesauce.
-Razor was mostly uninteresting.
-Gaius is one of the best villains ever.
-Gaius is a villain.

Apollo, per [info]flake's request (hi!)
-is disliked by me and is the object of my wishes about characters who should go away so the show would be better.
-has an insipid relationship with Kara in S3.
-is not hot.
-should wear his shirt more often.
-should not keep having the Exact. Same. Problem With Daddy every. damn. Time! Seriously, it's like, "Oh! Time for conflict with Daddy again! How does that one go? Because they haven't changed at all since we first got to know them."
-should mention his brother more.
-is not good enough for Dee.
-should have more healthy male friendships.
-was right about Gaius.
-should be remembered by the writers to have had a rather interesting relationship with Roslin.
-should have a weird twisted hook up with Roslin.

Starbuck, per [info]flake's request
-is the hottest hot.
-But only with that short, really boy hair cut.
-is the awesomest character of all in S1.
-started to get Mary Sued by the writers after that.
-should have had her intimate, personal details and histories more slowly revealed over the course of time.
-just seems emo with the painting, and whatnot.
-is realistically flawed in S3, just not in a way that is interesting to me.
-should be remembered by the writers to have had a rather interesting relationship with Tigh.
-should have a weird twisted hook up with Tigh.
-should be remembered by the writers to have a father/daughter reltionship with Adama.
-should talk about Lee's brother more.

Disney's Gargoyles, per [info]dlgood's request
-Brooklyn, Broadway, and Lexington were all 2d cariacatures, and thus unlovable and uninteresting to me. Hudson was a cariacture, but I loved him.
-All the gargoyles should've been variations on brown and beige. None of this purple and blue business. I don't care if it was a kids' show.
-Demona and Elisa should hook up some time.
-Demona should've been more conflicted more often. As should've Xanatos, though one thing I did like about the show was both of these characters were conflicted at various points.
-There was too much Avalon and Oberon.
-In fact, although it was extremely intelligent, innovative, and really beneficial for kids, there were too many fantasy literature enemies/friends. The show seemed to get caught up in these worlds/characters, which took away from the basic episodic premise which was the reason I kept coming back: 10th c. monsters fighting modern crime with modern policewoman.
-There should've been more Elisa/Goliath.
-Goliath was hot.
-The Pack was boring, and Fox was not hot.
-Picard should've voice-acted a part. Every other TNG alum was there!
-"The Mirror" was my favorite episode.
-They should've never found any other gargoyles.

Veronica Mars, per [info]dlgood's request
(I'm only 2 eps into S3, so don't spoil me, and also be aware these opinions are not based on all of canon)
-I don't think I would like Veronica as a person.
-I disagree with Veronica's moral standards fairly often.
-Veronica's character flaws are difficult for me to identify with and have sympathy for.
-Duncan is neither good looking or hot.
-But it's hot that he thought Veronica was his sister and slept with her anyway.
-Logan and Veronica deserve each other.
-Weevil is hotsauce. Logan/Weevil is more hotsauce.
-Wallace is often treated as the token Black character and is rarely put to cool use.
-Jackie was a tool. And did not get redeemed quickly enough for me to have the least interest in her.
-The resolutions to both S1 and 2 felt like they were pulled out of a hat.
-I don't find anything to do with the Casablancas interesting.
-Charisma Carpenter was hotter in most eps of this than she ever was on BtVS/AtS, with the exception of the AtS ep, "You're Welcome".
-Mac hasn't been interesting since we found about her birth switch.
-Veronica's and her Dad's relationship development is stagnant.
-I love Vinny.

The story where Veronica Mars meets Gargoyles, per [info]dlgood's request, is so awesome it needs me to put on my SRIUS XOVER cap and deal with it properly.

Heroes, per [info]semby's request
(I've only seen 1 season, so again no spoilers, and these opinions are based on incomplete canon)
-There are too many characters.
-Not a single one of the characters has made me feel particularly connected or sympathetic in any way.
-Nothing really seems to happen.
-I don't like the monologues or the chapter name texts at the beginning of each episode.
-Suresh is sometimes a self-righteous ponce.
-Peter is not hot.
-Nikki is boring. And annoying.
-Weiss, I mean Parkman, is hot and interesting and cool and I don't care what anyone says he's not a loser, 'cause he's Weiss.
-I did not find Hiro cute at first (felt writers were trying too hard. Do love him now, though).
-I don't understand the season finale and thought it was stupid.

Jane Austen, per [info]semby's and [info]lilian_cho's requests
(I put JA books on there, but really I meant JA in general because I have lots of unpopular movie opinions, too)
-Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility is the best movie adaptation of an Austen book
-Mansfield Park has nothing relevant to say about today's society; it has not "survived"
-Northanger Abbey never stood on its own
-I liked the Kiera Knightley Pride and Prejudice.
-Matthew McFayden is hotter than Colin Firth (but Firth is still a far better Darcy)
-The 1999 Mansfield Park with Frances O'Connor is atrocious.
-The 2007 Mansfield Park with Billie Piper is atrociouser.
-Andrew Davies is not a god.
-The Gwenyth Paltrow Emma sucks.
-The Kate Beckinsale Emma is sufficient.
-Mark Strong is hot.
-Clueless is one of the best movie adaptations of a Jane Austen book.
-people need to stop publishing their Austen fanfic; I don't care what it does for the furthering of the fanfic genre, it's all extremely BAD
-The Republic of Pemberley is a very nice place to start off as a wee fan and online newbie, but not such a place for continuing your fan and online experience. It's over conservative, hidebound, and over moderated.
-Even though Pride and Prejudice is by far the better book, my favorite one is Sense and Sensibility.
-Not every girl wants to be Lizzy; for instance, this one doesn't.
-I do not like Willoughby better than Colonel Brandon.
-Emma Thompson was way too old to play Elanor even if she was perfect.
-Emma is Jane Austen's most sophisticated novel.
-Emma is too long.
-Jane Austen novels are all about the same thing.
-Jane Austen was not the first great novelist.

Torchwood
(I've only seen the first season, so please don't spoil, and be aware these opinions are not based on all of canon)
Tosh, per [info]a2zmom's request
-often seems forgotten by the writers
-often seems stuck with the dry, technological, moving-the-plot lines, and almost none that give insight into her personality. Which could be her personality, that she doesn't share much of herself, but it often reads as having no personality
-is thus often boring or forgettable
-is hot in a jumpsuit, just like Kaylee. Is hot period.
-is not stupid for crushing on Owen. She's been raised conservative and tends to still be conservative herself, in some ways. Crushing on the bad boy doesn't seem unrealistic.
-is not stupid for messing around with alien girl. She didn't seem to me ignorant of the fact that alien-girl might be trying to get something out of her, Tosh just didn't believe it was negative. Which is pretty naive, but also--well, if I were her, I'd be thinking, "isn't there just one pleasant alien out there? Just a gal who just wants to go home? Like Dorothy Gale? Mmm Dorothy. I'd do her." I mean, something like that.
-is the most relateable character on the show, and should've been the POV character, not Gwen.
-is over sensitive. (Her reactions to "what her friends really thought" seems really disproportionate to what we got to hear. I like to imagine, though, that she heard a lot more than we the viewers did).
-seems sweet enough.
-who were we talking about again?

Jack Harkness, per [info]essie007's request
-is not good looking.
-is not played by a good actor.
-needs to change his clothes more often.
-is not dark or edgy.
-is way more interesting and likable on Doctor Who, even though I didn't really like him there, either.
-is mostly asexual on TW.
-is pan sexual on Doctor Who. Everything that moves, people. And many things that don't.
-is amorphous and inconsistent on TW. He's easy enough to make out on Who, but on TW they seem to have no idea who he is. You could say he seems mysterious on TW because he "never tells anyone anything", but mostly we know that because characters tell us he never tells anyone anything, not because we seem him not telling, or visibly hiding mysteries. Okay, he doesn't tell us what the hand is or why he's immortal, but Who watchers all know the answers to those questions, and his only other "mysteries" seem to be some locker or something that doesn't appear until the second to last ep, and a stolen identity that doesn't even seem to make sense in the character's timeline if you consider his appearance on Who.
-annoys me.
-annoys me all the more because I don't understand the hype surround TW and I feel like I'm just being arbitrary or missing the point or something.
-should never, ever use technobabble. He should say, "that thing that goes right there" and expect everyone to knows what he means all the time, because he seriously does know some shit but never feels the need to bother to explain it to anyone else, and Tosh should have to translate to technobabble, which Owen should have to translate back to plainspeak, and Jack should just look at everyone and say, "That's what I said." And Tosh should be all, "But what did you mean about that thing right there [re: something else]" and Jack should just keep staring and say, "You know, that thing" and look at everyone like he's disgusted with their incompetence.
-is way better in my head than I think he is on the show.
-is not having sex with Ianto. Is rather rehearsing incomprehensible lines at Ianto the writers told him to say. Sorry, guys.
-is wishy washy. (E.g., End of Days: "I know what I'm doing, guys!" "I have no idea what to do." "I won't let anything bad happen." "Everything bad that happens is Owen's fault!" etc)
-has no excuse for standing on the tops of buildings like Batman or Angel.

Lucius Malfoy, per [info]lilian_cho's request
-Jason Isaacs is too hot to play Lucius.
-Book!Lucius is not hot.
-or elegant.
-or very smart.
-Lucius does not beat his son, though in my head sometimes he fucks him. Not canonically, though.
-Lucius loves his family dearly, and not only because he thinks his descendants are his own immortality.
-Lucius was extremely glad the first time Voldemort died, and was very sorry when he came back.
-Lucius was very disappointed Draco wouldn't make friends with Harry, and would have been both a bit amused and proud if Draco and Harry had been fucking like bunnies in school like all the fanfic says.

Draco Malfoy, per [info]lilian_cho's request, turned into one of those, "My Draco" things, which I think needs a separate post.

Snape, per [info]lilian_cho's request
-is not Alan Rickman.
-is ugly.
-is yeah, still hot.
-does not wear Armani.
-does not put special stuff in his hair to make it greasy so he is unattractive to students, particularly Hermione.
-did not die for Lily.
-would have been cooler had it been made more explicit that he did not die for Lily.
-was crushed on by Petunia.
-looked like Adrian Brody in his youth.
-WAS NOT IN THE WRONG FUCKING HOUSE. This still upsets me.
-did not coddle Draco to make Draco weaker or make Voldemort think he was still on his side.
-coddled Draco because he LIKED Draco and wanted to make him crumb cake, just like [info]entrenous88's icon says.
-In fact, he loved the Malfoys dearly.
-is confused and sometimes taken aback by Molly and Ginny Weasley.

Buffy and Angel, per chrisleeoctaves' request
(I didn't know whether to do the shows or characters or ship. So naturally, I did whatthehellever! The problem with this one isn't that I don't know what's popular. It's that I know so many people who like so many different things that the meaning of "popular" kinda frays.)
-Buffy could never have a healthy relationship with unsouled!Spike.
-Unsouled!Spike finding some kind of redemption would have been interesting, but would've changed not only future seasons into another show, but past seasons too because it messes with underlying concepts.
-And since the first four seasons or so don't question those underlying concepts negating them would've disappointed me severely because it would've managed to actually change what those seasons were.
-The Buffy/Spike balcony scene is hot.
-Buffy is hotter when she's younger with more fat on her.
-Angel is hotter when he's older with more fat on him and less pink lipstick.
-Spike is hotter when he's older with less makeup on him.
-I quite like "Beer Bad".
-"Selfless" is my least favorite ep of either series, and a microcosm of everything I thought BtVS was going to be when I refused to watch it.
-I hate Joyce.
-I don't really like Dawn all that much. I enjoy her necessity to plots and have sympathy with some of her character flaws, but I tend to like her better on the page than on the screen.
-I like the Buffy and Angel comics (even though I've only read a couple of each) and am glad they're being written.
-Buffy should never "decide" between Angel and Spike.
-I don't really like Fred.
-B/A is not an immature or under developed relationship.
-Buffy will always love Angel.

Arwen, Aragorn, Faramir and Eowyn, per [info]vaysh11's request
(I just did them all together, and am including both book and movie)
-I like that they extended Arwen's role in the movie, especially nixing Glorfindel and making it her who rescues Frodo. It makes her more accessible and gives her more reason for being there; in the books, I'd pretty much forgotten about her until she showed up at the end.
-I don't care that it's "inaccurate". It makes for a better story, and for more female empowerment. That's all I ask! Really.
-I did not like the romancey bits they added though.
-The part where Aragorn falls off the cliff and remembers a scene back from Rivendell is ridiculous.
-And Arwen has no nipples.
-In fact, I really could've done without Arwen/Aragorn in the movies at all.
-Book!Arwen is boring.
-But I actually found book!Aragorn boring too after he was "Aragorn" instead of "Strider", so maybe they deserve each other.
-Eowyn struck me as more manly in the book.
-I don't know whether I like the more stodgily heroic Eowyn I remember from the book or the more girly (with all the sister/mother/daughter/nurse/maiden images) I remember from the movie.
-There should've been more Eowyn/Faramir in both the books and movies.
-movie!Faramir is made of hotsauce.

Beauty and the Beast, per [info]seraphcelene's request, and she should know I put it in the list just for her to request it :o)
-It's lame that Catherine and Vincent don't kiss on screen.
-Not just for shippy reasons, but for, I don't know, anti-prejudice reasons. Srsly! As [info]seraphcelene says, Cat people need love too!
-Linda Hamilton rarely looks nearly as beautiful as she really is because of the frumpy ugly
-I don't really like Linda Hamilton in this.
-In fact I don't really like Catherine that much at all.
-Lots of the tunnel characters, like Mouse, are cliched and sort of boring.
-Devin is cool though.
-Even father is sort of boring; the show probably would've been better without him.
-Vincent would've been cooler without father. He'd've been all bitter and broody and dark.
-Vincent should have had more conflict with his Beastly aspects, instead of being essentially perfect.
-Vincent should not be telepathic.
-Lots of the fantastical/poetic plots and enemies don't work for me; I enjoy Vincent getting tied up in Catherine's legal plots more. Like I wish with Gargoyles, I'd rather it'd be this fantastical creature dealing with modern plots, rather than fantastical creatures dealing with fantastical plots.
-I don't dislike S3 as I haven't seen it yet.
-The eps should have been shorter.
-There should be a spin off.
-I should write it.

Re: Spike

I love the character arc and I'm a diehard canon Spuffy shipper. That said, I was kind of disappointed when we get Spike's back story in Fool for Love. I always thought it would have been brilliant for them to curse Spike with a soul in an attempt to defang him, only to find out that with a soul he was EXACTLY the same. Someone needs to write this AU for me. Yis.

I rather like Spike's back story. But I'm not a Spuffy shipper. Also, I watch with the idea that qualities you have as a vampire are qualities you had as a human, but which just didn't/wouldn't necessarily manifest. I love the idea that William had always contained the possibility of Spike, and Liam of Angel.

But that AU would be awesome!

Hi, just passing through. I have limited opinions.
Buffy & Angel
Buffy should have ended after Season 3. The replacement characters viz. Anya, Andrew and especially Dawn were useless. The bad guys were all useless after the Master and possibly Mayor Wilkins.
If they insisted on carrying on for the money then Buffy's resurrection should have been darker and less Spikecentric.
Glory.... no.
Spike should not have returned from the dead. He ruined Season 5 of Angel.
Fred should have died sooner.
Angel should have killed Lindsey.
Higher Power Cordy.... no
Season 4.... no.

Beauty and the Beast
I'm watching the re-runs of Season 2. Why did I love this show? I agree with your opinions.

P.S. I have always denied the existence of Jane Austen, even though I've stood on her grave. I refuse to believe such a woman ever existed and I believe she was a man using a nom de plume and his mother's diary.
Thank you.

Aw. I love seasons 4-6. And both 4-5 of Angel.

I still love the B+B show, even though I agree with my opinions, too. Vincent is hot, and THEIR LOVE IS SO TRAGIC, omgzors.

Um. Why don't you believe in Jane Austen?

I was being unpopular - obviously overdid it there on Angel and Buffy. I think I'm too old for Beauty and the Beast. I get irritated with it and when you consider what happens in an episode it's so slow and portentous about very insignificant things where they could have just said something rather than use Shakespeare or Dylan Thomas. Anyway, I was a great fan of Vincent: I like tragic heroes.

However, my dislike for the Austen has taken on epic proportions; probably caused by being forced to read Northanger Abbey at an early age and it was just so silly it twisted my whole view of the author. It was obviously a man mocking women's sensibilities (no pun intended).

I even came up with a taste test theory: D. H. Lawrence or Jane Austen. I discovered you couldn't like both. The fact that they were totally disparate authors was irrelevant. Sure sign of a conspiracy theorist!

Jolly good fun this meme.

I don't really think age has much to do with enjoying B&B...my mommy loves it, anyway.

I quite like both DH Lawrence and Jane Austen. I don't know what this does to your theory.

Thanks so much about your opinions about Aragorn, Arwen, Faramir and Eowyn - I am not so sure they are all that unpopular ;-).

-I like that they extended Arwen's role in the movie, especially nixing Glorfindel and making it her who rescues Frodo. It makes her more accessible and gives her more reason for being there; in the books, I'd pretty much forgotten about her until she showed up at the end.
I still miss Glorfindel. And Frodo challenging the Ringwraiths.

-I don't care that it's "inaccurate". It makes for a better story, and for more female empowerment. That's all I ask! Really.
Me - when I want female empowerment I watch Aliens and Terminator II + III ;-).

-I did not like the romancey bits they added though.
I liked them kissing on that bridge in FotR. The Aragorn-in-bathrobe scene, however, that was just ridiculous. And it did not help that Aragorn looked like my American Studies prof in that scene, either.

-The part where Aragorn falls off the cliff and remembers a scene back from Rivendell is ridiculous.
This is one of the scenes which thankfully I Obliviated from memory.

-And Arwen has no nipples.
* * * * *goes to look for Arwen's nipples*

-In fact, I really could've done without Arwen/Aragorn in the movies at all.
I whole-heartedly agree.

-Book!Arwen is boring.
Certainly, LĂșthien was much more interesting.

-But I actually found book!Aragorn boring too after he was "Aragorn" instead of "Strider", so maybe they deserve each other.
;-)

-Eowyn struck me as more manly in the book.
Eowyn *is* Dernhelm who *is* a man. Her story is Tolkien's great medieval transgender tale. Too bad it did not make it into the movie.

-I don't know whether I like the more stodgily heroic Eowyn I remember from the book or the more girly (with all the sister/mother/daughter/nurse/maiden images) I remember from the movie.
In the extended version, I loved Eowyn singing at her brother's funeral. That was just awesome.

-There should've been more Eowyn/Faramir in both the books and movies.
Agreed. However, not with this where-did-this-come-from-Howard-Shore? muzack sound-track.

-movie!Faramir is made of hotsauce.
He is :-). But then, for me Faramir will always be the one from the classic slash fanfic From the other River Bank by Dwimordene.

Looking forward very much to your separate My Draco-post!

The thing is I read the book over 10 years ago and only ever reread parts; I don't really remember a lot of stuff from it. I'm actually chuffed I even remember Glorfindel's name. But I don't remember much else about him, so it was alright they cut him. I also forgot all about Dernhelm and LĂșthien.

I could've done without even the bridge kissing! But for some reason VM doesn't work as well for me in that movie when he's being sensitive as when he's being a badass.

And I've only seen the extended version of Fellowship, and not the other two. I need to do that sometime!

I just wish I didn't have to go to specific movies or story types to look for female empowerment. It's alright with me if things get fudged to give females stronger roles, because that's what I'm into. And it makes more sense to do it with something like LOTR than with stories that deal with actual historic times in which females weren't empowered at all.

I haven't read that fic--I haven't read that much LOTR fanfic at all, because although I loved the book I was never very fannish over them. I loved the movies, too, but they felt like fanfic of the books to me, in a way, in a very good way, and they were exactly what I wanted and I never felt the need to have more than exactly what they gave me. But I'm sure there's some wonderful stories out there I really need to try--especially if they have Faramir. Or Eowyn. Or Faramir and Eowyn. I love them to smush! I'll check out that link, thanks so much! Sounds like a good place to start :o)

Certainly, LĂșthien was much more interesting.
Luthien's a total badass. I love her. You've read Philosopher at Large's Leithian Script Project (A Boy, a Girl and a Dog), yis?

Eowyn *is* Dernhelm who *is* a man. Her story is Tolkien's great medieval transgender tale. Too bad it did not make it into the movie.
Ha, that's an excellent way of looking at it.

So many cool ideas I don't know where to start! I haven't thought about Twin Peaks in a long while... I used to love it so much. I never saw the movie. I remember being somewhat let down during the series after the killer was revealed, though. But damn, what a great time we had watching that show.

Gaius *is* one of the best villains ever, indeed. I look forward to watching the season premiere tonight (on Tivo).

I look forward to seeing your "My Draco" post someday.

I really enjoyed watching Twin Peaks. I hear it was this phenomenon back in the day, but I don't ever remember hearing about it.

I look forward to seeing my My Draco post sometime too...sadly there are way too many things I never get around to.

Speaking of which, it's pretty much been forever since I talked to anyone on lj. How are you, anyway?

I'm doing pretty well. I keep a fairly low profile, don't post a whole lot. Most of the time I think of posts in my head, but when I sit down at the computer all I have time for is a quick flick through my small flist -- then I have to go. My mornings are fairly busy and that's the best time to post anyway because if I post later then nobody is reading!

These days all I like to read online is HP fanfic, 95% H/D. Offline I read mostly SF/F, as usual. I just found a great YA series by Philip Reeve called the Hungry City Chronicles. Highly recommended, especially if you enjoyed Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series. We've also started watching the new Doctor Who finally, and I'm enjoying it immensely.

I miss seeing you around! I have your IJ feeding into my LJ, but I see you posting so rarely. *clings*

Without looking at the rest:

-Weevil is hotsauce. Logan/Weevil is more hotsauce.

Oh,YEAH, howdy. I've thought this since the beginning.

Mansfield Park pretty much describes my first 20 years. I couldn't read it for ages, because it was too painful. I thought I was being too sensitive, until a friend told me it reminded her of my family, and she wondered how I'd got through it. So only it only doesn't apply to today's society in societies that are actually current.

I adore Tosh.

I don't what it is about Jack. I recognize that the actor can't act, and I don't usually fall for slightly pretty boys, but he has stolen my heart.

I'm sorry your childhood was MP-ish. That sucks.

See, the part about Fanny not getting treated like a family member and such feels like it will always be relevant. But a big thrust is that Fanny is "moral" while some of her relatives are not so much is difficult, because Fanny's morality is so outdated. A big part of the book is how she disapproves of theater, for instance. That just comes off as esoteric to me. I mean, I'm pretty sure many people feel that *I'm* a prude, but what she's prudish about makes me feel like she's just a bit ridiculous, even though it was the convention of the time.

I'm liking Tosh more and more as I watch S2, but I still feel like they forget her most the time. I guess she's hard to develop except in eps that are "hers" because the whole point of Tosh is that she's quite reticent and seems to have a rather low self-esteem, but still. Willow seemed that way S1-2 and they were actually able to give her some beef most eps.

Gaeta is one of the coolest characters there is, with a hidden complex story that much better because it doesn't get harped on (*coughs*Starbuck*coughs*).

He is! I wish we had more of his story.

Bill/Roslin should never happen in canon.

Word. I love that they love each other, but it would just be too weird and scary to have the President involved with the military commander. It should remain platonic.

Gaius is one of the best villains ever.

Totally. I think on some level, he really does want to be a better man; but he will never succeed because he's weak and self-absorbed and totally blind to his own failings. He's a complex, very human study in the banality of evil.

Plus he has a Jesus complex. I get a twisted kick out of that. *g*

Re: John Barrowman: I feel the same way about him as you do about Tricia Helfer. He's handsome in an aesthetically pleasing way, but I don't find him hot. Except when he's kissing James Marsters. *g*

That's not actually the reason I don't want them to get together. It's more to do with the fact that they're one of the relationships I find more interesting unresolved. I don't feel that way about all relationships on tv, (though tv does seem to feel that way--that is, how the writers don't seem to think two people can stay together and be happy), I just do about this one.

I don't find Barrowman aesthetically pleasing. Dunno why.

Anywho, how goes it?

-Demona should've been more conflicted more often. As should've Xanatos, though one thing I did like about the show was both of these characters were conflicted at various points.

The thing that amused me is that, no matter what ever happened, it was always the end result of some plot that worked out just how Xanatos meant it to...

-Wallace is often treated as the token Black character...
-Charisma Carpenter was hotter in most eps of this than
-I love Vinny.

1. Yes...
2. Ditto. I've generally found CC surprisingly un-sexy considering how hot she is.
3. The collection of tertiary characters was, in general, something I considered a big strength of the show.

I actually quite like the bit about Xanatos making himself rich because he sent himself the coin from the past.

2. Yeah, CC has bits in the right places, which usually I like alright (Catherine Zeta Jones). But she does nothing for me.
3. I'm liking some of the tertiary characters even more now I'm watching S3! Sheriff Lamb, how I love thee! (woe). Parker is lame, though.

Disney's Gargoyles
- There really, really, really should have been more Elisa/Goliath. And, in fact, according to Wikipedia there would have been in a spin-off where they got married and adopted children (because of course no inter-species sex or anthing) but it got canned on account of who knows what cause I surely don't remember. They are totally hot together.

- Brooklyn, Broadway and Lexington were never the most interesting characters which is sad. I loved Hudson and the episode where he was losing his sight in his good eye and ended up having sooper seekrit surgery to correct it.

- Goliath is totally, totally hot and Keith David has one of the hottest voices ever in the history of voices. Right up there with my love for Clancy Brown's voice and Ron Perlman (as Vincent, o'course)

- I got really bored with the Avalon stuff and how Elisa and Goliath weren't in New York and really stopped watching it until they came back with Goliath's daughter who I never really found all that interesting despite the forced love triangle and everything. I could have really done without any more gargoyles because it would have been really fun and interesting to see them all fall for human women ... or each other.

Heroes
OMG!! I hate Parkman with mad passion. No way!

Jane Austen
I totally agree about Matthew McFadyn, Emma Thompson and Colonel Brandon. I LOVED Colonel Brandon with mad passion. *sigh* Even if Alan Rickman had wonky teeth. Still, teh love...

Yes, please and please and please for the love of god and mary and the little baby jesus tell people to STOP printing the JA fanfic. It isn't good. It isn't fun. You are NOT JANE AUSTEN and you're ruining everything. Although, I will admit to a certain curiosity about Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict which seems more like a time travel romance chick lit kinda of thing then anything else. I am sure that it is horrendously Mary Sue'd.

Beauty and the Beast
OMG! I so KNEW you put that in for me. Ha ha ha ha!!! You're calling my name, baby girl!
And I LOVE this show even though I re-watch it and cringe and squirm because of the colossal badness of some things, but then I love Catherine and Vincent, or really mostly Vincent and I keep watching.

- Catherine was never the most interesting part of the pairing because all she really ever did was rush headlong into trouble knowning that Vincent would save her and he always did, totally KILLING people for her and how wrong is that.

- My favorite episode is possibly No Way Down because Vincent is all hurt and tortured and lost and bewildered and OMG! the pain. See that's the good, like how he's all tormented and kinda crazy when after the whole Paracelcesus arc he goes deep into the tunnels and loses his mind and him and Catherine finally really KISS and make a baby. And that baby storyline was so damn dumb and annoying.

- Vincent on the top of that train killed me dead with the badness every damn time.

- 80's fashion is inevitably frumpy ugly, you just can't get away from it. Although Linda Hamilton was totally way hotter, at least to me, when she was all beefcaked up for T2.

- There should definitly be a spin off and you SHOULD TOTALLY write it. In fact, where's my fanfic!!!!!

Dude, your absence has totally forced me away from fandom things because peeps don't *like* me in fandom. Okay, okay, I am totally lying but I'm not POPULAR and when I talk not man listen and then I get all sad and woeful. BUT I've got meta, so yeah, I'll go there for two seconds. Fandom has also totally been driving me bat shit crazy with the wank and I'm annoyed and everyone is discovering new fandoms and moving on ... only, only I can't. My deep and abiding love for fannish things centers around the Jossverse (and really just Buffy and Angel) and so ... yeah. Whatever, I'll play in my little sandbox all by my lonesome. Only I'm being really dramatic so ignore me completely.

I understand about the review thing because I never read reviews of things that I want to see, only things I've already seen or don't care about one way or another. So, it's okay, I get it. Besides [info]my_daroga has totally been keeping me company on the movie front.

SO PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE .... get some sleep and get your thoughts together and post something, anything!!!!!! *mwah* I miss you, too!!

My daroga and I sometimes discuss the awesomesauciness that is you :o)

I'm sorry I'm not around much...I miss you lots!

The thing about Jossverse being so echo-y lately is...I guess I have a new fandom with my whole Harry/Draco fad, but I don't really feel the need to be a part of it the way I did with Jossverse. I don't really see people talking the way they did/we do with Jossverse. I don't know if it's just the group of people, or what. Anywho, one thing I'm trying to get at is that even if I'm not into a fandom at a given time, I still like talking about fandom stuff--like why we love the stuff we do, stuff about writing, stuff about fannish space and whatnot. Maybe it's just because I'm not around so much, but I don't seem to see that around as much and I miss it!

-HEE. It would be fun to write a spin-off.
-Linda Hamilton was HOTNESS in T2.
-HAHAHAHHA. Vincent on the train.
-Did I mention how I wish Vincent had to battle his own feralness more? Christ Jesus, I just read this Harry/Draco story in which Harry gets turned into a werewolf, but a reverse werewolf, life where he's in human form but he has all these wolf-instincts he has to fight, but on the full moon he's in a wolf body but has a human-instinct mind. And Draco had to stay with him because it was his father who cursed Harry and Harry would go totally feral without the human influence. It was awesome. I don't know why my kinks take me the places they do, I really don't. Even though you don't read H/D I rec it (the writing was quite nice too).
-"Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict" -- Oooh! What's that? The thing is I would actually LIKE Mary Sues if I could identify with them at all. It's just the Mary Sues I read are rarely interested in anything I am. Though, oh! I've read some Snape/Hermione where Hermione seems so much more, "look, I identified with the bookish girl so I decided to make her me", than it is Hermione, and I've liked those. Me and my twisted HP fanfic.
-The only reason I like Parkman is he's Weiss on Alias. He's so awesome in the first 2 seasons of that show.
-OMG, have you seen how many spin-off ideas were tossed around for Gargoyles? It makes me sad because there never were any.
-DEAD TRUE about Keith David. Christ. I'm pretty sure he's like #2 on my sexy voices list.
-Yeah, Angela (Goliath's daughter) was damn lame. OMG gay gargoyles! That would've been awesome.

First of all, for the record, I would only consider one or two of your Veronica Mars statements as "unpopular opinions". The rest, you're pretty much in agreement with big chunks of the fandom ;)

And I totally agree that Clueless is one of the best Austen adaptations - I think it's because it's not trying so hard to be a true adaptation. It generally follows the story, but it's different, it's silly, and it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Now I'm wondering which opinions about VM are unpopular! Now that I'm watching S3 I see that the show sees that Veronica's morals aren't all that, so it's far more easy for me to watch.

I think you're right about why Clueless is great. Austen never wrote The Great Novel--I think they're some of the best books out there but they were never striving to be something outside themselves.

re Jane Austen: Are those unpopular opinions? I second every one of them (except the one about Gwenyth Paltrow's Emma - I like that movie!). Clueless WAS an excellent adaptation, and Sense and Sensability is my favorite as well. I have nothing interesting to say just *nods*

re Jack Harkness: OK I'm going to respond as if I haven't seen season 2 of Torchwood at all (some of my opinions would change if I didn't). Basically, I don't know if this was you're intention, but you made me ROTFLMAO! As a Jack fan I can see where you're coming from on almost all of it, and it's oh so true! "is not having sex with Ianto. Is rather rehearsing incomprehensible lines at Ianto the writers told him to say." You have nailed their "relationship." That's absolutely what I thought. *hugs you* "has no excuse for standing on the tops of buildings like Batman or Angel." After I finished laughing my brain immedeatly went into ret-conning mode and I've come up with two theories a) He's immortal so he doesn't have to worry about falling off, and the view is very nice. b) He likes to PRETEND that he's batman-esque, because he's oh so vain that way, and so he is posing for helicopters and spaceships and passerbys on the ground who will probably just think he's a jumper in any case. I'm banking on the latter.

The only bit of your opinion that confuses me is the not "not good looking" bit. I know it's all subjective. But still... his face is like perfectly proportioned. I would absolutely understand if you had said "is not ATTRACTIVE" but "is not good looking"? *sigh* I guess that's why it's an unpopular opinion. I heart you still. The rest is GOLD.

re Buffy and Angel: I'm only going to bother commenting on the things I DON'T agree with, because the rest just gets one big nod. a) I think Angel goes in and out of hotness (relatively speaking - he is ALWAYS hot). Aging wise, I don't think his degree of hotness varies, just his TYPE of hotness. b) I don't LIKE Joyce. I don't think I care enough to HATE her. She just annoys me, and whenever she's on screen I wish she would disappear. Her best episode of the series was "The Body." True story. c) I don't have any vast feelings for Fred one way or the other. I enjoy her enough when she's on screen, and I cried when she died but *shrug*meh.

re Lucius and Snape: YES!

Basically I agree with most of your unpopular opinions. I don't know what that says about me. Probably that I'm clever and have good taste. ;)

Some of the Jane Austen opinions are unpopular because some worship the Firth P&P and worship no false idols.

Maybe I meant Barrowman wasn't attractive, who knows. But he has that butt chin and those googley eyes and small forehead and weird neck.

Agree about DB's "type" of hotness, but his later type is hot to me while his earlier type is just pretty.

I was glad when Fred died.

I want to read your "My Draco" list. Also, how's the circus-freaky snakey story doing?

-I liked the Kiera Knightley Pride and Prejudice.
AUGGH I am never speaking to you again.

-The 1999 Mansfield Park with Frances O'Connor is atrocious.
-The 2007 Mansfield Park with Billie Piper is atrociouser.

I did a lot to it, mostly deletion. It's for a ficathon that's due soon, so I dunno if I'll be able to add the parts I want.

My My Draco thing is turning into an essay. Surprise surprise.

Jane Bennet's and Wickham's looks made things make more sense in the KK P&P, though that's entirely superficial. Still, though. Also Mrs. Bennet seemed toned down, and it always annoyed me HOW annoying she is in the '95 P&P. She's supposed to be annoying but she also does love her daughters. What I liked most in the KK one though was the commentary on space, lack thereof, and privacy (and lack thereof). Although the sets were utterly inaccurate and not at all the little that was described in the book, I think some of the blocking demonstrates some of the struggle for women's independence not just in the broader scheme of things but in the home as well.

Have you watched the new S&S and Persuasion yet? I'm just about to get them on Netflix. I was cautiously optimistic about the Billie Piper MP, but it was HORRIBLE.

Davies was admittedly genius like with P&P but he has yet to produce anything staggering since.
